The dentists at Legacy West Dental no longer practice the use of Silver/Mercury fillings. We interact daily with many patients who still have Silver / Mercury fillings in their mouths from years past. We regard these fillings as less than pleasing to the eye and know that over time, weaker tooth structure will result. At Legacy West Dental, we employ the use of porcelain inlays and tooth-colored onlays. This creates a beautiful esthetic in the mouth while adding strength to previously-weakened areas of the tooth. These methods are not only beautiful and strong but also the prevailing bonding technology in the dental field.
Why We Say “No” to Silver Fillings
There are several reasons we no longer facilitate the use of Silver fillings in our care. Silver fillings have edges that, over time, wear down and can crack and easily break off in the mouth. As a result, sensitive parts of your tooth become exposed, allowing cavities to begin. As it ages, the metal in a silver filling expands and contracts and can, at times, split. Silver fillings typically contain 50% mercury. Over time, they can corrode, leak, and possibly cause further damage to your teeth and gums. At Legacy West Dental, we recommend all fillings be replaced with Tooth-Colored Restorations.
Why We Say “Yes” to Tooth-Colored Restorations
Resin-based onlays are bonded on the individual tooth, creating a tight, more superior fit with the natural tooth. Our use of Tooth-Colored Restorations can be employed in cases even when most of the tooth has been lost to decay. This method will allow for the remaining tooth structure to reside intact and be strengthened.
Tooth-colored restorations contain fluoride, which can help prevent decay. The resin in the on-lay wears like natural teeth and does not require placement at the gum line. This allows your gums to remain healthy. Ultimately, we are confident this will increase your love for YOUR Smile!
